The Department of Home Affairs has withdrawn their immigration directive on the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP). Essentially, this means that Home Affairs has decided not to renew permits granted to more than 250 000 Zimbabweans in South Africa.
The permits currently expire at the end of December 2021, after which the Department of Home Affairs has instructed Zimbabweans to apply for mainstream visas. This move could leave hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans unable to return to South Africa after the December break.
In response, Moneyweb is reporting that the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP) Holders Association and non-profit organisation African Amity have brought an urgent application before the High Court in Johannesburg to overturn the decision.
