Artificial Intelligence appears to be moving into all industries across the globe, and now, even into our airline industry.
TopAuto is reporting that Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) intends to use AI as well as automation to enhance operations at its sites. This will incorporate a number of novel tactics designed to expedite the travelling process while improving security by digitising the aircraft experience.
“We are currently busy with a number of initiatives that will harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to drive self-service functionality through various touchpoints at ACSA’s airports,” said group chief information officer Mthokozisi Mncwabe, as reported by Engineering News.
The implementation of a new biometrics-based border control system using facial recognition and a passport barcode with embedded biometric data is one of ACSA’s top priorities, and the Department of Home Affairs will assist with this.
As with other countries, ACSA intends to develop a digital platform that will link all of an airport’s services with a single user interface. “The idea is that multiple services will be aggregated and accessed through a single platform and user interface, such as booking a flight, a car, or a hotel,” he said. Although cybersecurity has been considered a source of concern, Mncwabe added that organisations can make sure that, at the absolute least, their security systems are kept up to date with the most recent patches.
Given these big changes, it is important to be mindful of the necessity to update and align legislation so as to properly regulate AI processes.
